The primary expansion strategy has always been to make use of innovation in its expansion policies. In order to justify its mission the marketing team initially led by Grant Harrison introduced loyalty club cards. The benefit of this facility led to receiving of extra point on purchase of every pound worth of goods. As the customers kept on adding points on purchase of products, the company provided the scope of discount on next purchase. This policy of company shows creation of value and earning loyalty from their valued customers. (Taylor 2012). External analysis Macro environmental analysis The PESTLE analysis has been used show the macro environmental factors affecting the competitive advantage of the company. Political factor The rise of retail companies has an influential role in defining the political factors and performance of Tesco PLC. The present tax rate, legislation policies encourage the retailers for creation of jobs on a domestic basis. Considering the size of the organization like Tesco, the company plays a crucial role in creating employment opportunities on a local basis and this also leads to increasing the demand for its products and diversification of role of the employees (Contributor 2014) Economic factors Tesco PLC is mostly dependent on the market share of UK, as it has more than 30% market share in the country. The changes in the economic factors are most likely to affect locally rather than globally. The economic factors may affect the average cost, profits, and prices of the various types of products available with the company. It is important for the company to be of your of changes in the policies in the taxes and the factors which could affect the availability of liquid flow of money for the company. The internationalization and diversification focuses on advertising economic products of the company rather than luxurious items. This strategy was undertaken by the company create a balance in the disposable income levels and household incomes. (BBC 2014) Social factors There has been a lot of change in the present trend of shopping. The society of UK prefers one-stop shopping rather than shopping in bulk. Due to this change in the social pattern the company has added more number of nonfood items for sale. The nature of goods and services demanded by the customers is mostly dependent on the attitudes and beliefs which is further influenced by the social condition. This change in the behavior is due to the awareness of rising health issues among the consumers and this is the change the demand for items. In order to adapt to these changes the company is working on meeting the demand for organic and healthy products. (BBC 2014) Technological factors With the advent of e-commerce and online shopping Tesco PLC has experienced a lot of opportunities by the advancements in technology. The facility of online shopping and home delivery has led to broadening of the customer base. Moreover the self-service checkout point offered by the company provides the convenience for a quick transaction with the customers. In order to meet the long-term objectives Tesco has implemented energy efficiency projects to reduce the carbon footprint (Neville 2013) Ecological factors The company is committed to reduce the carbon footprint as much as 50% by the year 2020. It also aims to reduce the waste produced in the individual stores by creating happiness on the customers and promoting clinginess inside the stores. Legislative factors The various types of government policies and legislative measures have a direct impact on the performance of the company. In the past government policies taken by food retailing commission in the year 2004 suggested to introduce a code for practice which would then abolish many current practices including making changes in price without notice and demanding payments from the suppliers. In order to facilitate these changes the companies provided its customer price reduction on purchase of fuel and spend the same amount on grocery stores. The company also implemented several promotional offers which offered products at a lower price ( Mankiw 2012). Implementation of Porters five forces analysis The general model of implementation of Porters five forces has been shown below as follows: Figure 1: Components of Porters five forces (Source: E. Dobbs 2014) Threat of substitute products and services The threat of substitute products in a grocery retail chain like Tesco PLC is considered to be low for the items and medium to high for the non-products. The food retail chain operated by small chains of convenience stores, organic shops, off licenses shops are not seen as a major threat to supermarkets like Tesco which is known to offer high quality of products at economic price. (Magretta 2013). On the other hand the threat of substitutes for nonfood items like clothing is considered to be quite high. Due to the prevailing recession in the country the customers are inclined to obey discounted prices, hence the company is a major threat to the specialty shops. (Winnett 2012) Threat of new entry of competitors As it needs huge capital investment to establish a brand name the threat of new entrants in the retail industry to compete with Tesco PLC is relatively low (Poulter 2014). Intensity of competitive rivalry The intensity of competitive rivalry is fairly high due to the existing competition from companies like Waitrose, Asda, Morrisons and Sainsbury. Some of the discount retailers like Aldi and Lidl is also known to surpass the sales of Tesco PLC during recession. (Reuters 2014) Bargaining power of buyers The customers are more attracted towards the low prices hence bargaining power of buyers is fairly high. The customers can make the switch to a different brand very easily. (Merchant 2014) Bargaining power of the suppliers The suppliers are always concerned for their contracts with large supermarkets and retailers like Tesco, Sainsbury and Asda. The suppliers tend to offer the lowest possible price to survive in the cutthroat competition. Hence the bargaining power of suppliers is fairly low (Reuters 2014) Internal analysis Comparison of the basic and the unique resources The basic resources of the company includes the general line of products in the nonfood items such as clothing, electronics, petrol station, telecom services and financial services through Tesco bank. The food items of the company includes the fast-moving consumer goods required for daily usage and. Some of the unique features of the company include international growth in the non food and retail industry. The increasing market share, insurance and brand value through to school online services has added to the uniqueness of the company (Mentis 2012) Analysis of the business functions of the company The main business function of the company lies in proper customer service, research and development, administration, providing human resources facilities, sales, distribution, marketing and implementation of Internet communications technology. The company aims to create value for collaboration of its core functional areas with IT services. Figure 2: Functional areas of Tesco (Source: Reuters 2014) Basis of competitive strategy The Porters generic strategy is used to show the competitive advantage of the company over other existing markets. It is one of the traditional methods to examine the environment and know about strategy position of a particular firm. The critique of porters generic strategy formulated by Bowman is believed to be more effective to understand the requirements of the customer. In relation to the porters generic strategy the company holds the position of cost leadership unless it can manage to differentiate its line of clothing and introduce charge premium price on their apparels. In relation to the Bowman strategy clock the company is best suited to adopt hybrid strategy with element of both cost leadership and differentiation. A hybrid strategy is known to achieve lower price than its competitors simultaneously it can be argued Tesco needs to keep the prices on the higher side if differentiation needs to be achieved by the company. Figure 3: Bowmans strategy clock (Source: Shakhshir 2014) Strategic choice and strategy evaluation Application of Ansoffs Matrix 6.1.1. Market Penetration - the company can look forward to increase the market share by increasing the share of grocery business at the expense of its competitors like Sainsbury. 6.1.2. New Product Development- the expansion of business in petrol sales and development of financial services can bring about this intended change by the company. 6.1.3. New Market Development - Tesco PLC can look forward to bring market development by moving into convenience to market and expansion in international market 6.1.4. Diversification- the diversification strategy comprises of high-risk. This includes Tesco exploring its business horizons such as automobile industry. Choosing of Ansoffs Matrix for suitability In order to choose the Ansoffs matrix for suitability the company needs to ensure market penetration strategy and product diversification. This should be done as per the suitability of the consumers (Taylor 2012). Conclusion and recommendations Based on the several findings of the report it can be concluded that porters strategy is relevant to identify the company positioning of the company. By knowing the competitive advantage researchers have been able to identify Tesco as the third-largest grocery retailer in the world. The company needs to work on its strength such as high brand value, use of technology and international presence in more than 13 countries. At the same time Tesco should reduce its dependency on the UK market and work on reducing the high transportation cost. The company can work on his opportunities such as strategic alliance with other companies and entering Asian markets for further expansion and growth. Reference List BBC 2014. The Doctrine of the Person and Work of Christ

Introduction The person of Christ has been the center of theological debates in both Christian and non-Christian arenas. Theologians and philosophers have attempted to define the person of Christ using human and divine attributes, which Christ portrays. Moreover, the prophets and disciples provided insights about the person of Christ, which have enhanced the definition of Christ using both the human nature and the divine nature.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Doctrine of the Person and Work of Christ specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Among Christians, Christ is the savior of humanity. The apostasy of humanity compelled God to devise means of saving humans from sin and averting their eternal condemnation. In this view, God sent Christ to save humanity by becoming flesh through normal birth, living as an example, preaching about the Kingdom of God, and shedding His blood to redeem humans from their sin s. Frame (2013) holds that Jesus Christ is â€Å"our Lord, Savior, Redeemer, King, Friend, Shepherd, Leader, and Teacher† (887). Essentially, the person of Christ and His works portray Him as the savior of humanity in the world in which the sins have pervaded. Therefore, the research paper aims to describe the person of Christ and His works in relation to the divine nature and the human nature. The Person of Christ Virginal Conception of Jesus Christ To execute some of His roles such as the salvation of the humankind, Christ took the human nature and bore all the attributes of men. The human life of Christ is evident in the various aspects of His life from birth until death. It is imperative to understand that Christ was born of a woman, who was a virgin. The birth of Christ was not unique for it occurred like other births of babies. As a result, several people view Christ as the son of Joseph, a mere carpenter (Placher 2001, 7). Moreover, when Christ was born, He went throug h the stages and processes that Jews undergo. For instance, after 8 days, the Jews named and initiated Christ according to their culture. The element of initiation and naming after 8 days was very instrumental in compounding the human nature of Christ and increasing the bond between Him and humanity. Humanity of Christ To affirm His human nature, Christ also felt emotional and physical pain just like other humans. When Lazarus, who was the brother of Mary and Martha, died and stayed in the grave for three days, He demonstrated emotions like ordinary humans. Owen (2001) explains that Christ shed tears, which is an emotional demonstration that takes place during an unfortunate demise of a close family or friend (22).Advertising Looking for research paper on religion theology? Moreover, Jesus Christ felt the physical pain when the Romans and Jews tortured and crucified Him. After the death Christ, Joseph of Arimathea took His body and buried it in a grave. The events of death and burial reflect aspects of human nature since all humans must die when their lifetimes on earth end. Christ as a Spirit The spirit form of Christ is evident in several scenarios that occurred during His life on earth. Disciples of Christ witnessed some of the events that distinguished the human nature of Christ and demonstrated His spiritual person. When Christ was only 12 years of age, He surprised the elders in the synagogue with His extensive knowledge concerning the issues of the scripture. The extensive knowledge of the scripture that Christ had is one of the factors that distinguished Him from other children of His age (Placher 2001, 6). In addition, during the baptism of Christ, unique anointment and spiritual presence of God demonstrated the existence of the trinity and the spiritual nature of Christ. Deity of Christ Some of the events that reveal the spiritual person of Christ include the transfiguration and incarnation. During transfiguration, Christ appeared to be more of spiritual than human. Transfiguration is one the activities that can only materialize in the spiritual form of a person. Other major factors that show the divinity and the deity of the spirit person of Christ include the events such as the one that transpired during his baptism in the River Jordan (Frame 2013, 889). When John baptized Christ, a dove landed on His head and a voice spoke from heaven confirming that indeed Christ was the beloved son of God. The voice from heaven spoke and said that, â€Å"this is my beloved son in whom I am well pleased† (Matt. 3:17). Therefore, the events that occurred during the baptism of Christ are very practical in portraying the spiritual person of Christ and creating a distinction betwee n Him and the humans.Advertising We will write a custom research paper sample on The Doctrine of the Person and Work of Christ specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Christ the Image of God and the Hypostatic Union The fact that Christ remained infallible irrespective of all manner of insults that He received during His lifetime on earth substantiates His spiritual person. The substantiation materializes since God is the only infallible being in heaven and on earth. Therefore, the infallible nature of Christ depicts Him as God, who took the form of man and operated as a complete spirit in the human form. According to the scripture, Christ explains that whoever has seen Him has already seen God, since God is in Him and He is in God (John14:9). It is imperative to highlight that Christ is a reflection of God and He is one of the members of the trinity. In the exposition of the hypostatic union, during His lifetime on earth, Christ lived as a human being and as a spirit. In essence, Christ had the form of a spirit and the form of a human being, all of which facilitated His role and work of salvation on earth. The concept of the hypostatic union explains that Christ did not only take a complete human nature, but He also took a complete spiritual being. The Work of Christ Savior and Priest Christ plays very important roles in the lives of Christians, who view Him as the savior, priest, and a prophet. When men sinned against God, Christ came to save them and restore the union between them and God. Through the act of sacrificing Himself for humanity, Christ played the role of a savior. The sacrifice that Christ made to save the humankind from the wrath of God was an act of reconciliation aimed at bringing together the union between God and humanity. The concept of sacrifice is very clear in the scripture because the disciples assert that, â€Å"while we were yet sinners Christ died for us† (Rom. 5:8). Furthermore , Christ is a priest, who sacrificed Himself for humanity to bring atonement. According to Placher (2001), as Christ understands the weaknesses of humans, He sympathizes and intercedes for them before God (4). The roles of cleansing humanity of their sins and interceding for their redemption are the roles of the savior and the priest. Prophet The ability of Christ to preach the word and pass commands from God to the humankind presents Him as a true prophet and clearly elucidates His prophetic role. For Christ represents the eternal life through His sacrifice to the humankind. The excellence that Christ demonstrated through His words and deeds from the scripture affirms His role as prophet (Owen 2001, 5).Advertising Looking for research paper on religion theology? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Although Christ came to the earth as a savior, Christians believe that a day is coming when Christ will come with a prophetic authority and every knee shall bow before Him (Phil. 2:10-11). The process and establishment of the prophetic authority held by Christ is one that is eternal and beyond human rule or influence. Conclusion During His lifetime on earth, Christ lived a life that represented the divine nature and the human nature. The representation of the person of Christ has been the center of controversy in the field of theology. As a result, the person of Christ has been the center of theological debates in both Christian and non-Christian arenas. The ability to combine the divine nature and human nature into one entity, Christ, is a phenomenon that theologians call ‘hypostatic union’. Some of the aspects that substantiate the argument that Christ was indeed a human being include the virgin conception, His humanity, and sufferings, whereas the elements that demon strate His divine nature person include the deity, infallible nature, savior of humanity, priesthood, and prophethood. During His time on earth, Christ played the roles such as prophet, savior, and priest. The roles are very practical in the life of several individuals, who profess the Christian religion. According to the Christians, these roles played by Christ are still functional and applicable in the daily engagements of life. Reference List Frame, John. 2013. “That which does not kill me, makes me stronger” Essays

â€Å"That which does not kill me, makes me stronger† Essays â€Å"That which does not kill me, makes me stronger† Essay â€Å"That which does not kill me, makes me stronger† Essay This quote is frequently heard and spoken in times of great pain and loss.   It tries to make sense of all the hurt the world has to offer.   What people want more than anything is the ability to make sense of all the things in life that go wrong.   Essentially turning a negative into a positive.   This is part of the great spirit of optimism that is uniquely American.   Unfortunately, there is no rhyme or reason to pain or loss.   No one is better off from being raped,   no one is made stronger by having been called names because of their race, or being beaten as a child.   I do not think that what does not kill me makes me stronger.   I do believe that hard things, bad things makes people realize what they are truly capable of, what they are able to recover from, and what they value. Four years ago my family suffered a terrible loss.   My 21 year old sister was killed in a terrible auto accident on March 7, it was the most devastating thing that ever happened to me and my family.   We are recovering, slowly.   As the years go by I miss her more but the pain is less.   I do not feel that I am stronger simply because my sister died.   I can guarantee my parents do not feel stronger for having loss a child.   It was through the loss of my sister that I realized how much I loved her and how important she was to all of us.   It was through her death that I valued my family more and refused to ever again take them for granted.   What did not killed me made me realize what I have and what I lost. For people who are already had their fair share of disappointment, what does not kill them can really mess them up.   Child abusers, alcoholics, drug abusers, the homeless are all examples of people who through their own personal bad experiences did not rise to the occasion.   They suffered and they continue to suffer.   They were not made stronger, they were overwhelmed and burden – essentially destroying their lives. I appreciate and admire anyone who has the ability to draw great strength from their own personal loss.   Optimism is always welcomed in a world full of bad surprises.   But I prefer a more realistic approach to life.   Bad things and good things in life – I expect both and I prepare for each.

How 9/11 changed people’s life in the USE A devastating event that would forever alter our everyday lives. On September 11, 2001-a day that will never be forgotten- the United States experienced one of the worst terrorist attacks. 19 radicalist associated with al-Qaeda carried out a suicide attack at the world trade center, pentagon and pennsylvania killing approximately 3,000 people. (9/11 attack) Out of the three attacks, the planes that flew into the twin towers at the world trade center in New York City was the most destructive. The whole nation was in a state of shock as many watched the horrific event happening on live television. The smoke coming out of the buildings, people jumping out of windows in desperate hopes of escaping the fire, and people crying on the streets as they watch everything happen. It called for a time of togetherness and support for one another. Although it is its 16th year anniversary, we can still see its effect today. Americans perspective changed on muslims, creation of homeland security and the constant war on terror are some of the long lasting effects the 9/11 attack had on America. It’s no question that 9/11 changed Americans perspective on muslims in a negative way. According to Ohio State University’s nation poll, about 20% of americans said they are unwilling to have a muslim friend (Sirota). It increased by more than double from previous poll which was 9%. They have also concluded more Americans are likely to oppose restrictions on muslim Americans. Although the dictionary definition of terrorism is â€Å"the unlawful use of violence and intimidation, especially against civilians, in the pursuit of political aims, its connotation has changed. Now people think of terrorism as a violent act that is committed by muslims. For example the travel ban, also known as the muslim ban, is a bill that allows the president to stop â€Å"certain groups of people from six majority-Muslim countries from entering the United States† (Lind). According to Jennifer Williams, â€Å"Between 2001 and 2015, more Americans were killed by homegrown right-wing e xtremists than by Islamist terrorists†,( Lind) This shows that we automatically associate muslims with terrorists activities but when an American does a horrific act we usually oversee it as a mental issue. According to polls conducted by Reuters/Ipsos, with nearly a majority of the poll, 49 percent â€Å"strongly† or â€Å"somewhat† agreed with the ban, while 41 percent â€Å"strongly† or â€Å"somewhat† disagreed and ten percent of them were undecided (Giaritelli). More people decide for it than against it which shows Americans view on muslims and their civil liberties. Like the travel ban, the U.S has many agencies and bills that help with the overall safety and security of the country. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, Transportation Security Administration, and U.S. Customs and Border Protection are amongst the 22 agencies under Homeland Security which was created in 2002 under president Bush. Homeland security was created as a direct aftermath of the terrorist attack. These agencies have become a part of an everyday American lives when traveling, dealing with cyber security issues or simply a natural disaster. According to Homeland security’s yearbook of immigration statistics, after 9/11 deportation doubled, from 200,000 before the attack to 400,000 (Green). The transportation Security Administration has changed the way people traveled forever. Before 9/11 and homeland security was created, liquid was allowed on flights and full body scanners were like science fiction. Now, we have occasional pat-downs, full body scans, thorough search on people and their belongings. That used to be done by private companies of the airport but now that is a federal responsibility. Now it has grown so much that not only do they try to prevent terrorist attacks but they also prepare for any man-made or natural disasters. The most important long lasting effect of 9/11 is how the war on terror affected the country in many aspects. In 2001, same year as the attack, President Bush declared war in Afghanistan to find justice on Osama Bin Laden. A year later, he declared war on Iraq for mass destruction. This has been one of the longest wars as it only came to an end in 2011. According to a study by â€Å"The Balance†, U.S economy section, the cost of the two wars for homeland security is approximately $1.146 trillion under Bush, 807 billion under Obama, and budgeted 156 billion under Trump (Amadeo). In total it was $ 2.126 trillion, a big increase in spending, which resulted in the U.S debt crisis increase. This war on terror is still an ongoing fight as terrorism seems to be never ending. In may of 2011 the leader of the Al-Qaeda group that was behind the attack, Osama bin Laden, was confirmed dead. The U.S SEALS six team under President Obama, were able to successfully find and kill the terrorist leader. The countries deep involvement in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq have created an even bigger problem like ISIS. ISIS stands for Islamic State in Iraq and Syria. The creators of ISIS focused mainly on the unwanted involvement of the U.S in the middle east. They have made propaganda videos saying just that and have been able to recruit many including American citizens. According to research from the New America foundation, ISIS has claimed 7 attacks in the U.S that lead to 82 deaths. The director of counterterrorism, Nick Rasmussen, expressed his concern about the growing number of recruited ISIS American members and stated according to the U.S intelligence â€Å"150 American citizen and residents have traveled or attempted to travel to Syria’s foreign fighters†(Alfred). It’s not only people who travel to Syria that have become a concern but especially those who living on U.S soil and fully support the beliefs of ISIS. Myre of the two-way breaking news stated â€Å"Virtually all the deadly attacks since Sept. 11, 2001, have been carried out by homegrown extremists†. N ow the effort is not just war on terror in countries like Afghanistan and Iraq but also to stop Americans from joining or committing such an act. One thing we can’t forget, the soldiers. Because of this long war on terror, there have been thousands dead and many suffering physical or mental issues. In total, there were 2 million deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq. According to U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administrations, 6,000 soldiers were dead and 44,000 were wounded. (Green) From those 18% of them suffered from Post Traumatic Stress disorder (PTSD) and about 20% suffered from Traumatic brain injury(TBI). The war on terror would not just affect the veterans but their families too. Many would have never imagined that the 9/11 attacks would still affect everyday lives 16 years later but it surely is. President Bush handled the attack well by taking action and creating Homeland Security and declaring war on terror in efforts to protect the country in the future. Security has become so much tighter at so many places especially when traveling. Many places around the country have emergency preparedness plans in place for all types of disasters because of the agencies under Homeland Security. A big accomplishment was made on Bush’s war on terror when the SEAL 6 successfully killed Osama Bin Laden under president Obama. The war on terror has been ongoing ever since the 9/11 attack and will continue until terrorism is stopped. The war on terror affected the economy negatively, changed America’s perspective on muslims and caused physical and mental injuries to many soldiers. The biggest problem it created is ISIS which doesn’t like U.S involvement i n the middle east. Although 9/11 had many negative impacts, it did not break the country but unite and make it stronger.

Personal Narrative Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Personal Narrative - Essay Example At that time, I was stationed in Manhattan, KS and had to choose between Manhattan, Salina, and Topeka. Topeka and Manhattan were testing on the same days and as fate would have it, I decided to give Manhattan a try. Having no navigational skills in the city, I was first challenged in finding the testing site for the physical agility test. When I arrived at RCPD range were the recruitment was taking place, I was shocked to realize that I was going to be put up against other forty people who were competing for five or six slots. Once I got out of my truck and started talking to other hopeful applicants I became worried about the chances of success through the hiring process. I was confused on what would be my next step if I was not successful and was unable to secure a chance in the police department. I felt as though I was under qualified after finding out that 60%- 70% of the applicants had degrees in Criminal Justice. I thought for sure that college would be a major hiring point. I was determined to prove my ability and advantage over the graduates who lacked professional experience. The air was thin and cold on this particular day, making just breathing a chore. Gazing out at the course the towers were tall and a long climb, the walls were high with steep drops to the other side. For the agility test, the recruits were expected to run through tires and drag a 170 pound dummy had to a safe zone. I felt confident since I was still in the Army and was in the best cardiovascular condition in my life. The lieutenant introduced himself to the crowd and began explaining the course, at the end of his explanation and demonstration he asked for volunteers to go first. In my mind I thought it would be good to volunteer, but I had learned early on in the Army not to volunteer for anything. I held my ground and stayed back to gauge the motivated people stepping to the front. I watched several individuals run through the course until it was finally my turn. Once I stepped up to the starting line my adrenaline ran high and I felt unstoppable at that point. I had heard the fastest time was 2:09 through the course on this day and I was determined to beat it and set a new record. I took off up the steep flight of stairs and down the other side simulating a chase. I felt like a wild animal closing on my prey as I hopped the fence and dropped to the other side. Next I ran through a makeshift neighborhood setting and to a high wall I had to climb. Once at the top I ran down the steps and around the turnaround point. It was then that I realized how fast I was moving, I was flying through the course and hurting badly inside. Despite the difficulty, I knew I had to hold on for the next 30 seconds and I would have achieved my target. I ran to the shooting simulation and picked the bad guy out of the standup targets, ran to the dummy drag the 170 pounds 20 yards like a dog carries a flea on a daily basis. Once I was at the end of the line I heard the scorer yel l â€Å"2:03†, I had done it. On the finishing line, I felt proud to have achieved my target and was convinced that I had already secured the job. My score got beat by a fraction of a second later in the day, but I was still proud that I was able to overcome the pain to get to the finish

Stock and Commodity Markets Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Stock and Commodity Markets - Essay Example With globalisation, MNCs began to explore the markets outside there domestic grounds. Stock and commodities market too are being made attractive by respective governments, which is also resulting in wealth creation for the citizens and companies alike. If used judiciously, 'Stock and commodity trading' greatly helps in tapping resources for developmental projects, welfare schemes and other such nation building exercises. In order to leverage the economies of scale at different locations, such companies try to set up some of their operations at different locations. Moreover, with the advancement in ICT, global distances have tended to become smaller while the world is gradually being seen as a global village. Bracken (2004) underlines that it was since early 1990s when the term 'Globalization' became a catch phrase as it started entering into all walks of life even in developing economies. Libya doesn't have a well defined stock market as Colonel Muammar Qaddafi thought it against the vision of applied socialism and popular democracy (CountryWatch, 2007). But now with the emergence of his son Seif al-Islam on the horizon, there are talks of a new vision. Libya has the largest reserve of crude oil, but despite such a great wealth and a population of just about 6 Million the country could not progress much during all these years (The Economist, 2007). A well regulated trading as such helps in stabilizing market prices for both buyers and sellers. For example a farmer growing mango crop can enter into a contract with a juice making company or a retailer prior to the growing season to pre-sell his mango crop at an agreed-upon price. This way the farmer is also assured of a minimum price for his crop, whatever the circumstances are, in the coming months. On the other hand the juice making company is also assured of a minimum level of supply for the company which helps in preparing long term plans and pricing strategies. Similarly if a listed company requires money fo r expansion or diversification, the company can tap the stock market for borrowing enough money. The borrowed money in turn earns some interests for the lender, which helps in creating wealth for the lender. Stock markets provide an opportunity even to individual and smaller investors to lend their money this way and thus they are also able to create wealth. The wealth created this way helps in encouraging the consumer market as demands for goods and other commodities increases subsequently. Therefore, the cycle helps in boosting the morale of investors and financial institutions, which in turn helps the economy of the nation. Examples of fast developing economies like India and China together with well developed markets like US and UK are good examples of the role of stock and commodities markets in nation building. Middle East and North Africa too have been identified as potential growth oriented zones on account of sweeping reforms in some countries of the region. Except Libya an d Syria the European Union has recently concluded bilateral association agreements with all states bordering the Mediterranean (Euromonitor, 2007). Dissertation Objectives The dissertation in general aims to; i. Establish a well studied relationship between the stock market trends, the commodity markets and the economies of nations. These effects have become of particular significance in view of the fast spreading effects of
